Acne

Acne occurs when your pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Our skin has oil glands which secrete an oily substance known as sebum to lubricate your hair and skin. When your body produces an excess amount of sebum and dead skin cells, the two can build up in the hair follicles and form together as a soft plug, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive. This plug may cause the follicle wall to bulge and produce a whitehead. Or, the plug may be open to the surface and may darken, causing a blackhead. Pimples are raised red spots with a white center that develop when blocked hair follicles become inflamed or infected. Blockages and inflammation that develop deep inside hair follicles produce lumps beneath the surface of your skin called cysts. Acne is a very common skin issue that can affect people of all ages, not just teenagers! The impact acne has on a patient’s psychological and emotional well-being cannot be overstated, especially if it is severe and occurs in adolescence.

Treatment of acne: Acne can create permanent, physical scarring, and prompt treatment is important. Consistency and patience on the part of the patient are typically required as it can take time to find the exact regimen that works for you. There are many different ways to treat acne and the same approach will not work for everyone. Our Board-Certified Dermatologists and Physician Assistant can help determine the cause of your acne and develop a customized treatment plan that suits your skin and lifestyle.

Cysts

Cysts are benign growths that are very common. Sometimes the tendency to develop cysts runs in families, and other times they are random. No one knows exactly why cysts develop, but they are not caused by a lack of clean skin. Even though they are benign, they can sometimes enlarge and become very painful. At this point, they may drain on their own, or it may be that they are unable to drain spontaneously and need to be treated by a dermatologist.

Treatment of cysts: Draining a cyst empties its contents but does not fully remove it permanently. The only way to permanently remove a cyst is through skin surgery. Our Board-Certified Dermatologists and Physician Assistant have knowledge and extensive experience to work with you to determine your treatment options.

Eczema

Eczema, called “atopic dermatitis” by dermatologists, is a condition characterized by red, dry, itchy skin. It is a predisposition patients are born with, but it may show up at any time in life. Some patients suffer from eczema in infancy and eventually “outgrow” their symptoms, while other patients do not develop symptoms until adulthood. Patients with atopic dermatitis have very dry skin that gets inflamed very easily and then itches, sometimes severely.

Treatment of eczema: Our Board-Certified Dermatologists and Physician Assistant can help counsel patients on how to properly moisturize their skin to prevent outbreaks as much as possible, and can prescribe medications to treat the outbreaks once they occur.

Moles

There are a few notable features in a mole that should warrant you to have it checked out. First of all, any mole that is changing, bleeding, or growing rapidly should be concerning. Other concerning features include asymmetry, border irregularity, multiple colors within the same lesion, changing colors, and size of the mole. Anything larger than a pencil eraser should be checked.

Treatment of moles: A biopsy is a simple procedure that removes a portion of the mole to be further evaluated by a pathologist. This is a quick and easy process, that is often done in a matter of minutes in the office. Our Board-Certified Dermatologists and Physician Assistant are best trained at evaluating moles, and can quickly tell you if yours needs to be removed for a biopsy or not.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a very common skin disease that can have a profound impact on a patient’s quality of life. It consists of red, scaly areas on the skin that are commonly found on the scalp and over the joints but can really occur anywhere on the body. Sometimes they itch or burn. Patients with psoriasis may or may not have a family history of the disease.

Treatment of Psoriasis: Many treatments have been used for psoriasis including topical medications, oral medications, phototherapy, and biologics. In recent years, several new and very effective medications have become available. Although there is no cure for psoriasis, dermatologists are now able to manage psoriasis much better than in the past. Our Board-Certified Dermatologists and Physician Assistant have knowledge and extensive experience to work with you to determine which medications may work best in your case and to discuss your treatment options.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of the face. It causes persistent redness in the cheeks, nose and chin, as well as episodes of flushing of the skin. This is often associated with acne in these areas as well. The diagnosis of rosacea is best managed by a board certified dermatologist or our physician assistants, as we are well trained on how to recognize the difference between Rosacea and other common skin diseases. We also have unique and specialized treatments to offer our patients that are often unavailable to other practitioners.

Treatment of Rosacea: Lasers or Light based devices can also be used in our office to treat the redness in the skin. To learn more about this, please visit the cosmetic laser section on our website, or schedule a consultation. Our Board-Certified Dermatologists and Physician Assistant have knowledge and extensive experience to work with you to determine which medications may work best in your case and to discuss your treatment options.

Rashes

Rashes are very common and come in several different varieties. Many are associated with itching which can range from annoying to incapacitating. Some rashes come up suddenly and others may be present for years. Regardless, the job of a Dermatologist is to try and determine the underlying cause. Medications, illnesses, contact with specific substances, internal diseases, and many other things can cause a rash. While getting rid of the rash as quickly as possible is important, it is even more important to make sure that a rash is not a sign of something dangerous to your health.

Treatment of Rashes: Our Board-Certified Dermatologists and Physician Assistant are there to make you feel more comfortable by managing your symptoms until the rash has fully resolved.

Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer refers to the abnormal, uncontrolled growth of skin cells. Nearly all skin cancers fall under three types: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Skin Cancer is by far the most common type of cancer affecting about one in five people in their lifetime. Nearly all skin cancer is treatable if detected early enough and early detection is essential to preventing the cancer from spreading. If melanomas are detected early, the chance of spread internally is very small and poses much less risk than if left untreated. Risk factors include sunburns, tanning bed exposure, family history, and abnormal moles. Skin cancers vary in shape, color, size and texture. If you notice any new, changed or otherwise suspicious growths or lesions, they should be examined immediately by a Dermatologist.

Treatment of Skin Cancer: It’s important to do self-checks on a regular basis as well as a skin exam done by a Board Certified Dermatologist. Although skin exams may be a little uncomfortable for some, they’re crucial to early diagnosis of skin cancer and can potentially save your life. During your appointment, one of our Board-Certified Dermatologists or Physician Assistant will perform a total body skin exam (TBSE) that includes an inspection from scalp to toes. Be sure to mention any areas of concern before or during the exam.

Warts

Warts are very common and come in many shapes and sizes. They can occur in any area of your body that you have skin. Regardless of the type and location, all warts are caused by a virus.

Treatment of Warts: There are many different treatment options for warts, and there is no one treatment that works for everyone. For some patients, a single treatment may result in resolution, but oftentimes, a patient may require multiple treatments to result in full clearance. If warts are large, multiple, occur in areas of thicker skin, or occur in a patient with immune issues, they are usually harder to treat. The virus can never be removed from the skin, so it is possible for a patient to have more warts in the future. Warts are also contagious, but not everyone who is exposed to a wart virus develops a wart on the skin. Our Board-Certified Dermatologists and Physician Assistant have knowledge and extensive experience to work with you to determine which medications may work best in your case and to discuss your treatment options.
